Vermont 3.0 is Stuck in VT

My uber cool and funky boss Paula worked her butt off to make this day happen. Everybody at 7 Days worked really hard to pull this day off - they kick serious ass.
Above, Paula is greeting people at the door and telling 'em where to go and what to do! The people never stopped coming, all 1,500 of them, it was a madhouse!

In other news, I climbed a belfry tower and nearly died. Then I caught a stomach bug and nearly died. Now I am getting unstuck from VT for a bit. Yeehaw!

We are off to SF for the AAN conference and Cathy and I will be giving our seminar on web video Thursday at 2ish so send us some good mojo.

Thanks to Steve Mease for the photo up top. That is me interviewing Noelle Bullion, a senior at Middlebury who I thought was just lovely! Please get stuck in VT and be a 7Days video intern Noelle!

Bye bye for now Green Mountains and hello ocean landscapes and breathtaking urban vistas!

Bye Bye Heath

There are a zillion tributes to Heath Ledger on YouTube but this is my favorite so far because the music does not suck. Hell, it is Cash after all. I never paid much attention to Heath Ledger's career but he seemed like a genuine, talented, sensitive guy. Very sad.

I remember seeing him in 10 Things I Hate About You and he seemed so young, just a kid! And now...

On a brighter note, Molly brought me the purtiest rainbow toe socks ever. They are going to make me well, I know it. And Tracy brought me chicken soup and spring rolls from Pho Dang for breakfast! YUM! Friends are good, so good.

Ai iz sick

Being sick when you do not have time to take chill out time and extended movie breaks really sucks. Night after night it is the same thing, edit, edit and more editing.

I have been working so hard and so much lately that the last social event I attended was Cat Ladee night when Goma and Sachie came over - when was that, weeks ago?

Oh, those Cosmos were tasty! And the spring rolls were divine! Thanks Sachie!

Sachie hard at work making tasty spring rolls!
Me want Cosmos sooo bad.
If I can survive this latest sprint and make it to SF next week and then tackle our AAN conference presentation, there will be some good relaxation time with friends ahead.

One foot in front of the other, repeat...

Diane's Fucking Personality

Thanks to Allison for the heads up on this one in which Diane Keaton drops the F Bomb on morning TV and wiggles her way into my heart with her brutal honesty:

Watch the entire clip here in which she talks about why she is too old to bother to work on her personality now that she is past her prime. Please old sexy lady, you rock the house.

"I always wanted to perform and find an audience, it's pathetic. So I worked on that, that's all I'm really good at, honing my personality skills..."

"Well now I'm sorta given up working on it because I'm past my prime actually. So I just sorta accept who I am but obviously I was somebody who wanted people to appreciate me and of course I wanted to be beautiful..."
- Diane Keaton on GMA

I think Diane is in her Little Edie phase meaning she no longer gives a shit but is hopefully less crazy, not living with her mother and not knee deep in cat piss.

Sign me up, I can't wait till I am old enough to stop working on my personality, trying to make people like me, wishing I was pretty and ready to CUSS on TV!

We Thinkz 'Bout Stuff, RILLY!

Undead Molly was generous enough to pass along a Thinking Blogger award to us!? We thinks she thinkz way smarter than us but we thankz her anyways!

Kool Kat

Kat and her Katster bike lock outside Burlington Telecom

I met local welder, sassy sculptor, extra super cool artisan and gal pal Kat Clear when I shot the Rosie's Girls vlog that went on to drum up quite a spirited debate on YouTube as to whether or not girls should be welding (uhm, what year are we living in??).

Kat has been spicing up Burlington and Winooski and our daily environs with her super sexy steel signs and sculptures. Where ever you are, there she is! She has a new sultry series in the works and you may be seeing her in a vlog in a week or two (spoiler!).
Kat and her Queen City Crown in Church St Mall

Additionally, Kat recently had a fancy press conference/Queen City Crown unveiling in the mall with the Mayor and baby quiche (Kat is wearing her glitzy headgear above) and got a fabulous write up in the Freeps.
Kat and her Radio Bean bike lock which still turns, even in winter!

I am saving up my pennies so one day I can afford to decorate my house with one of her works of art. And when I am in my 60s, I am gonna bug her to teach me how to weld cause I think that is a hobby I will enjoy more than sleeping.

We love you Kat, keep on truckin/weldin/sculptin and thanks for making our town SO KOOL!

Lovers of Pussy

In perfect keeping with my recent spurt of movies about crazy, intellectual, hermit artists, Scott was kind enough to introduce me to Louis Wain who I am shocked to say I knew nothing about?!

Louis had a bunch of spinster sisters who never left mommy's home (Grey Gardens anyone?). He eventually married his sister's governess who was 10 yrs his senior and promptly dropped dead of cancer 3 years later. Ffffft!

Then he went loco and got locked up and drew a bunch of psychedelic kitty paintings! In many of his portraits the kitties are being human which I have a special penchant for (and Sachie recently blogged about).

Here is a gem from an interview with Louis talking about his wife's cat Peter and the joys of pussy loving:

Then I trained Peter like a child, and he became my principal model, and the pioneer of my success. He has helped to wipe out, once and for all, the contempt in which the cat has been held in this country, and raised its status from the questionable care and affection of the old maid to a real and permanent place in the home.

I have myself found, as the result of many years of inquiry and study, that all people who keep cats, and are in the habit of nursing them, do not suffer from those petty little ailments which all flesh is heir to, viz., nervous complaints of a minor sort.

Hysteria and rheumatism, too, are unknown, and all lovers of 'pussy' are of the sweetest temperament. When a student at home, I have often myself felt the benefit, after a long spell of mental effort, of my cats sitting across my shoulders, or of half-an-hour's chat with my pet, Peter.'

Crazy cat artists, gotta love em!

Dysfunction Junction

Somehow I managed to see 3 movies this weekend and they were all about supposedly dysfunctional families: The Savages, The House of Yes and Grey Gardens.

I loved The Savages and my sister hated it (you can see/read our respective reviews for details). She thought it was indie lite and I thought it was sad, real and understated.

It reminded me of my trip to Iowa to watch my shriveled, hairless grandpa dying. My father and grandmother and I spent a lot of time around his bedside but nothing of importance was said. In fact, we hardly said anything. And when he did die, it was a day like any other.

This is the plot of The Savages. As Americans move farther away from their families, community ties loosen and we all become more isolated, resulting in this sort of sad, emotionless scene when the time to die grows near. Are we human underneath it all or have we become savages?

Two roads diverged in a wood, and I--
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference.
- Robert Frost poem quoted by Little Edie

What is it about intellectuals, artists and dreamers that makes us so prone to isolation and unhappiness? Do you have to be dumb to lead a happy, healthy, normal well-adjusted life?

Or is it like the normal-girl Lesly points out in The House of Yes, are all these angst-y loners just spoiled and BORED?

Lesly: I don't think you're insane.
Jackie-O: You don't?
Lesly: No.
Jackie-O: You don't think I'm an eensie weensie bit insane?
Lesly: I don't think you're insane. I think you're just spoiled.
Jackie-O: [exasperated] Oh please, if everyone around here is going to start telling the truth, I'm going to bed.
Parker Posey steals this film as Jackie-O. It is adapted from a play and has always been one of my favorite movies. After watching Grey Gardens I realized there are strong parallels between them. Familial ties that bind, and sometimes constrict, in ways that are awful but also comforting.

Jackie-O: I watch soap operas. I bake brownies. Normalcy is coursing through my veins.

Edith 'Little Edie' Bouvier Beale: 'Course, I'm mad about animals, but raccoons and cats become a little bit boring. I mean, for too long a time.
This film is disturbing on many levels. Maybe because I can relate to it, maybe because I have a solid streak of Little Edie festering inside me and maybe because their lives do not seem all that terrible to me. Sure, I could do without the kitty pee, the flies and the madness but the dancing, singing and complex squabbling is rather nice. At least it stays interesting!

And why is it that Little Edie can run circles around every one in this movie except her fast-talking mother? Because normal sane people are a bit dull and Edie is just one big burning ball of intense life force and unrequited passions.

Edith 'Little Edie' Bouvier Beale: But you see in dealing with me, the relatives didn't know that they were dealing with a staunch character and I tell you if there's anything worse than dealing with a staunch woman... S-T-A-U-N-C-H. There's nothing worse, I'm telling you. They don't weaken, no matter what.

It makes me glad that she tried a night club career in her 60s, even if she failed. It makes me sad that she died alone and was not found for 5 days. But people loved her, thousands of people still do. Maybe lots of people have a little dash of Little Edie and a penchant for creative headgear. Maybe that is why she struck such a chord.

Being eccentric and flashy is en vogue these days. Witness this disturbing Bazaar spread with Mary-Kate Olsen and Lauren Hutton playing the Beales. Voila, CRAZY becomes GLAMOROUS! EEK!

I am looking forward to the movie musical coming out this year and starring Drew Barrymore! I think Little Edie would be glad about her return to fashion. She would probably staple together a colorful outfit and prance around with an American flag to celebrate.

Sooner or Later

I am not sure why but I have been singing this song all day long. Perhaps cabaret rehearsals have uncovered my inner diva (as well as leaving my out of shape ass all achy - ouch)?

Sure Madonnna may not be the best singer in the world but she OWNS the stage for this one, oh baby! Like she says, "A girl can get awfully awful in the spotlight."

All I have to do is hear the opening bit to this song and I get out of my chair and start posing like an idiot. Damn, that lady puts on one helluva good show:

Classic Weirdo

My imagination functions much better
when I don't have to speak to people.

Patricia Highsmith

The great thing about getting older (and older and older - will I ever be old enough?) is that you can finally let your weird frizzy curly hair DOWN and be yourself, weird as you wanna be!

It is so liberating to do as one pleases and stop apologizing for it. OK, I am lying, I did spill someone's drink the other night and apologized profusely for it.

But in general, I can get up when I please, go to bed when I please, work when I please, look as I please, and do as I please. No excuses, no reprimands, no apologies. It feels good to be an old weirdo.

How weird are you? As suspected, I am the Classic Weirdo. No surprise there.

I'll bet author Patricia Highsmith is a classic weirdo as well, I dig her weirdo habits:

I have no television - I hate it.

I listen to the BBC World Service starting at 2 in the morning until 4.
I switch off the light and listen in bed.

I prefer to live in the country where it's quiet.
Woody Allen movies there are dubbed into Italian.

I don't set the alarm to get up. I get up when I feel like it.

The Man That Got Away

Thanks to Junk Thief of the Immaculate Taste, I have a new obsession and her name is Mina Mazzini. This was already one of my favorite torch songs thanks to Miss Garland in A Star is Born but Mina knocks this ditty outta the park - CHILLS:

We must not forget Miss Judy:

Damn this song just gets better every time I hear it. I used to belt it while walking Sheila in Mountain View Cemetery. I am sure the dead people didn't mind much. They know the score. This shit is classic. SHIVERS.

The Stucks have to be pretty short and I couldn't bear to waste this supreme cat show kitty footage or this delicious Smittens song.

Drums, Dragons & AT-ATs are Stuck in VT

As you can probably tell from these pictures, I was SO HAPPY to see the AT-AT walker (All Terrain Armored Transport from Star Wars) in the parade. I wish I could have interviewed its makers.

Watching that clunky AT-AT lumber down Church St, I was brought back to a Christmas many years ago when I was SO excited/nervous to find out what my sister got me. I was positive it was an AT-AT when I really wanted the Millennium Falcon. The anticipation was killing me (it is so hard to believe that Christmas ever meant so much).

Luckily, my sister did good and bought me the Falcon which I still have today but I do not know where. Still, I will always love the AT-ATs and their stop-mo movements (oddly, I used to work for Phil Tippett who was one of their animators!).

Watching one careen down Church St and cut a path through mobs of people made me imagine that at any moment those terrifying guns might start spraying laser bursts all over the place and the blood and gore would be spectacular.

Despite the cold and the crowds, I was genuinely happy to dance around with colorful, fantastical, drum beating Burlingtonians on First Night.

Also, this vlog was shot on the last day of 2007 which means that technically, I made 60 episodes of Stuck in Vermont in 2007. That is a nice number if you ask me.

Add it to the 40+ other Seven Days videos I made in 2007 and that brings my total to 100 videos in 2007 (roughly two/week). This is 1/10th of the videos The New York Times produced in 2007.

Oh yeah baby. Baby steps.
Happy New Year Vermont!
