Valentine's Day can be barf-inducing when you are single. Since I am generally of the single-variety, I have gotten used to that yearly barfy aftertaste. So I was pleasantly surprised this year when this dreaded day didn't suck?! Wha...?!

For starters, Suzanne the Cake Fairy delivered some tasty treats to a lucky few (I'm not worthy) and I promptly ate the entire thing! Yum! I hearts you Suzanne and I am so glad your love of Valentine's Day doth spilleth over onto my plate!

And then sweet Katie left roses on my stoop?!?! Flowers, pour moi!?! Crawford got so excited that he knocked them over. Take me back to Puerto Rico Kate, the ocean misses us!

And then there were some thoughtful cards that are now sitting atop my fridge, and even some emails and texts from far off loved ones.

Damn, it turns out that you can be a solitary old maid AND enjoy this stoopid ass commercial holiday too?! Thank you modern life, thank you.

And a new rerun of The Deadbeat Club playing this month as well! It is the New Year's episode from 2007, what fun. It features Suzanne M0nroe trying to hijack my show and lots of talk about the end of the world. Wow, that sounds just like this year! Apparently, I always think about the end of the world when a new year arrives?! Little did we know in 2007 just how impressively shitty 2009 would be...eek.

In 2007 I started vlogging for the first time but had not quite gotten the format down. Those early vlogs were really long, free form and experimental - basically me babbling. And in this episode I talk about how I wanted to make a well-structured vlog in which I interviewed VTers about their lives and what do you know? I did it. ;)

It is always nice watching old DBC and seeing how much has changed, especially when I am feeling like I move in slow mo and never get anywhere.

In the 2 years since I made that episode, I've produced 110 segments of Stuck in VT, interviewed just about everyone in town, got featured on Boston's The Chronicle and written about in the Freeps, not to mention having Stuck viewed all over the world. I got my dream job at Seven Days, bought a weird old house, and am continually excited by the work I do for the very first time in my life.

Who knows what 2009 will bring, but please let Mad Max be a way down the road. I still have to tile the front porch and figure out how to fit a ping pong table in the basement. I have plans, so many.

Winter Musings

Today I trudged to my sister's house along un-plowed sidewalks lugging my sister's half of our CSA. Winter fought my every step, lashing angrily in my face, causing my clumsy feet to slip and slide beneath me, daring me to give up and return to the safety of home.

Refusing to relent, my feet continued to trudge along in slow motion through the heavy snow, as though encased in syrupy molasses. What is normally a 10 minute walk dragged into 30 minutes. Dark was falling and I was the only person silly enough to be out in the storm. I felt small and fragile next to the fury of winter.

I longed for Oakland and those endlessly sunny days, wearing shorts-n-flip flops, and easy unencumbered 80 mph movement from place to place.

Hours later I was shoveling my driveway for the 6th time this weekend (I am so not kidding, the snow has been relentless) and my cell rang. It was Jen Hing in Richmond, CA. We haven't talked in ages and I started laughing like an idiot. How did I end up here in the midst of a snowstorm fighting desperately to keep my driveway clear while Jen is across the country in the land that is forever sunny?

Life is funny that way. Who the hell knows where you will end up and why?

After a nice talk I went in to get cozy in my lovely and odd, old Vermont house. I am not really sure how I ended up back here in this winter wonderland but I do think I am supposed to be here. And having grown up with this relentless snow, there is a part of me that will always be enchanted and awed by it, despite its ferocity.

Maybe it is good to feel small and humble 10 months out of the year?

These are some photos of our snowy wonderland that I took two years ago when I was walking around in a state of confused shock. The blankets of snow comforted me then. It was a sure sign of beauty and goodness that I desperately needed at that dark time in my life.

And then came Stuck in Vermont and a warm home of my own strong enough to be battered by a winter thick with storms. In short, I am a very lucky and humble girl this winter holiday who needs to get outside to start shoveling again.

Oh bloggy, I am so sorry for having forsaken you all these weeks. The lure of Facebook is so strong though. Why post here when I can post on FB and automatically reach out to hundreds of friends across the globe? My little online diary just pales by comparison, feign to deny it.

And to think that one year ago Facebook meant nothing to me. That status updates were not my hourly source of amusement. That I was not able to easily click on over to see photos of friend's of friends Halloweens and Thanksgivings.

Facebook is the brightly lit window on a cold winter's night that I love to peak into. Only I get to peak into windows across the world! Croatia, England, Denmark, Belgium and all over the USA - it is a Voyeur's Delight!

My old Stuck in VT blog got a face lift thanks to Don at 7 Days. For some reason people keep going to it despite its long ago retirement (turns up high in google searches for some reason or other) so we are resuscitating it. Happy days!

This weekend I learned that I need to buy some real boots. If I am going to live in VT, I need to be prepared. After a 5 hour shoot in the freezing cold (pics here), I was frozen through and through thanks to my stoopid fashion boots. This week, I search out some Mucks. It is time to embrace being a VTer, long underwear and all.

Whenever I go to Middlebury, I can't help but think about Nicholas Garza.

I wonder if in some alternate universe Nick is still alive and it is his sophomore year. And as I am going around interviewing kids at the Quidditch World Cup, he is there in the crowd somewhere having a good time with his friends. Laughing jauntily and eating a crepe, watching the matches from the sidelines, throwing out sarcastic remarks and strolling to the library later to study.

And the beauty of it would be that I would never know him. His name would not have been splashed all over the TV and internet. Nick would just be another intelligent, motivated Middlebury kid starting out on his life's adventure.

I prefer to imagine him there still, walking to classes, enjoying the change of seasons, DJing at the local radio station and entertaining others with his wit. In a way, a part of him will always remain at Middlebury, even if his body is gone.

Nick's memorial is 4pm, November 8th at Middlebury College. He is very loved and very missed.

Motherfracking Madonna

Kat and I made the trek up to Montreal for Madonna on Thursday. In all of the many, many years that I have been listening to her, imitating her and shaking my butt to her music, I never once got around to seeing her live. WTF???

Luckily for me, I never throw ANYTHING away so it only took a little bit of digging to come up with my lace black cut off gloves (my sister got these for me in Paris when I was a freshly converted Madonna-phile), striped slutty mall dress (and yes, I can still cram into it), bright orange hair bow (the one they made fun of me for wearing to a Lamoille HS dance) and ripped up Sex Pistols t-shirt.

When she first came out on stage, my heart almost stopped. Then I recovered and danced the rest of the show which was a blur of colors, spectacle, poorly remixed old hits, crotch shots and a musty walk down memory lane.

That chick is 50. Seems like only yesterday I was mesmerized by her gyrating on Night Tracks and copying every move she made.

Lovely Parisa of Pillows for the People fame brought the sassy charms of Manhattan to VT this weekend. We zombie walked, drank lots of strange elixirs, ate food from many countries, consumed massive amounts of Halloween candy, visited Howard's End, soaked up the scenery and talked a blue streak.

WHo would have thought I would ever meet someone more energetic and expressive than me and with a similar quirky boho style (not to mention dark curly hair!?)?! Nick of Shelburne Orchards was sure we were sisters and I wonder if he is right?!

Today I fell in love again.

On our trip to Johnson, we went walking at what was once called Married Student Housing near JSC. This was our first home in VT when we moved here from NYC and I was 7. Luckily, the craptastical apartments are surrounded by wild massive woods which we loved exploring as kids.

On our way into the woods we met this little flea of a cow cat who looked like Crawford's body double.

He bounced along after us into the woods and followed along side at an erratic pace.

We were being stalked! Hunted by Tigger!

He bounded up trees, bunny-hopped to keep up and dive-bombed us out of nowhere.

I have heard of these kind of dog-like cats that follow you around on walks but never had the pleasure of meeting one until today.

By the time we got back we were both smitten. Tigger had no collar but he looked fed and cared for. I asked some people if he had an owner and they were clueless. So we left Tigger in his woodsy paradise. I hope he has a warm home. What a champ.

Today was just what I needed.

Nothing says Fall to me like a relaxing drive down Route 15 to my hometown of Johnson, Vermont. My sister was my co-pilot and we stopped at old haunts along the way to do some filming for my 100th episode of Stuck in VT.

Hearty lunch in Johnson, a cemetery stop over, a woods walk at our old apartments, apple cider and donuts...it just does not get any better.

I only knew you for 4 days Fezzik but considering your youth, these past few days were a big part of your short life.

When I heard you chirping in the curtain with Crawford lording over you, I wasn't sure if you would live longer than a day. You lived all weekend but you got smaller and weaker without your mom here to care for you.

I was so glad to know you for that little bit of time. I wish I could have done more for you and I wish you could have lived longer. I was getting used to having you around little one.

I miss you and our hourly feeding sessions. I miss filling up jars with hot water so you could stay warm and cuddly. I miss your little whiskers tickling my nose and your greedy mouth licking up milk remnants off my palm. I miss your tiny little paws with miniscule nails clacking over my arms and your tiny nose always sniffing.

I loved watching you try to clean your belly and then get off balance and tumble over. Or the times you tried to itch your ear with your back paw but couldn't quite reach. You were so small and fragile, I was always afraid of crushing you. You trusted me and I wish I could have saved your life.

Thank you for staying alive until this morning so I could say goodbye one last time. Your last little big breaths are something I will remember a good long while. I hope you went to a far better place than this one and that someday your brothers and sisters will join you there.

I know it is silly to miss a rodent that you only knew for 4 days but I guess I just have to accept that is just me (this lioness understands). Now if only I could stop crying.

I can be a bit of a pushover sometimes. Conflict with strangers has always made me uncomfortable and I avoid it.

But something changed last night. When this lady stole my parking space on a rainy night in Winooski, I just couldn't help myself, I backed up and waited for her to get out of her car.

Bitch took a long time becasue she KNEW she had stolen my spot and she did so not want to face the music.

This is how our brief conversation went:

Me: (politely) Excuse, me, I was backing up to park there.

Her: (defensive) Yeah, I didn't see you but now I'm parked so...

Me (resolute) Well, I saw it first so that isn't fair.

Her: (freaking out) Yeah, if I was you I'd be pissed too but I already parked, BLAH BLAH STOOPID BLABBING like a honky ass geese.

Me: (calmly) Yeah, well I don't want to fight but what you did was not cool.

Then I drove away to leave her to her selfish, shitty life. I was a little upset but got over it fast.

I get points because I stood up for myself, got that shit off my chest immediately and did not get needlessly embroiled in a big pointless fight.

One small step for Evakind on her road to Alexis-ville. I think part of growing up is learning how to defend yourself in a healthy fashion. And it feels goooood.

I recently reread an old journal from the days when I moved back to VT from CA. That was in 2004 and I was experiencing severe culture shock and loneliness. I missed my friends, the sun and the ocean.

As is my usual MO, I made many TO DO lists in an attempt to turn my sad sack situation around. I have been keeping TO DO lists for most of my life. Tasks here and there are slowly crossed off while others are forgotten.

What was so pleasant about this particular far fetched TO DO list is that I HAVE DONE almost every damn thing on it, even the weird shot in the dark suggestions!?

While we were shooting Running Wild, a crowd gathered to watch us dancing around the Merritt tomb. They applauded when we were done and we felt like movie stars...in a cemetery.

Despite all my procrastinating, I managed to get a solid first draft of the ad I have been slaving away at. Will they like it? Time will tell.

I miss you Keith and Travis!!! No one dances in cemeteries with me anymore!

OK, my procrastination is done.

But before I go, you know that famous subway grate photo op from the 7 Year Itch (also a very good film)? I heard that her husband Henry Miller was in the crowd while they were shooting it and he was so pissed that she was flaunting her legs for all of NY to see that they went home afterwards and had a blow up fight which lead to their divorce.

There she was being adored by millions and immortalized as the personification of SEX and she was not loved by the ONE man she wanted. Heartbreaking.

I went to the Winooski Farmer's Market for snacks and presents and also wound up with a catnip toy in the shape of VT made by these talented people. I also got an uber cool Octopus t-shirt which will eventually swim its way to Barcelona and some delicious pickled garlic cloves.

Crawford is quite enjoying his new friend, the felt state of Vermont. He has been romancing all the neighborhood cats late into the early morning hours and sleeping his escapades off all day beneath the couch. He has such a pleased look on his face as he snoozes all sprawled out, he is clearly up to no good.

7/21/08: Over 10,000 Elton John fans swarmed the Champlain Valley Expo Monday night to watch the Rocket Man play VT for the first time.

After playing 49 other states, Elton finally made it to Vermont for his 50th. Fans from all over the country came to see history in the making.

Eva talked to boa-wearing fans about Sir Elton's charms and sang some of his greatest hits.

We also met a couple celebrating their wedding anniversary. Can you guess the name of their son?

Life has been a bit mad lately. Not enough time to breath, think, chill out. But despite all the silly rushing, Sunday mornings are reserved for the NY Times, french toast, iced tea and lounging with my favorite gorilla. Better still, the last two Sundays it rained heavily.

7/12/08: "The Dark Knight" premiered in Montpelier Saturday, days before it's general release.

We have Vermont's own Dark Knight to thank for this rare event - US Senator Patrick Leahy who has a small cameo in the film.

Patrick Leahy grew up in Montpelier Vermont. Blind in one eye, he spent much of his free time reading comics at the Kellogg-Hubbard Library.

Years later, he is the library's favorite Superhero, donating proceeds from his Batman film appearances and raising money from this recent screening of The Dark Knight.

Leahy sits down with the library's Comics Clubs to talk about Batman, "The Dark Knight," and why he loves reading.

Saturday was a wild day.

Here are the highlights:

Interviewed 2 Vt Senators, Bernie Sanders on Church St and Patrick Leahy in Montpelier.

Had assistance interviewing people and filming my Intros/Outros from Maggie and Anna (below).

Maggie is a member of the Supergirls Comics Club (run by the most awesome fellow comic book nerd Aubry) at the Kellogg-Hubbard Library - I wish I could join too.

Says Maggie (wearing my headphones below) in a careful-not-to-hurt-my-feelings-sort-of-tone, "You are doing a great job. But try to SLOW DOWN A LOT."

9 year old girls are SO SUPERGIRL cool.
Appreciated Ben T Matchstick's most awesome Batman haircut.

Enjoyed a tasty Mexican meal with Zombie Fighters (seen briefly in a former Stuck, Burlington Zombie Walk), post-apocalyptic kickballers (future Stuck?) Aubry and Pete, Ben the Beloved Storyteller and Cardboard Wielder and my Joker-loving sister.

Saw the premiere of The Dark Knight DAYS BEFORE everyone in the world got a chance to see it - KABLAMMO!

This Batman event was covered in The NY Times, USA Today and the Boston Globe. VT MADE HEADLINES!! Thanks Leahy!

Rocked out to Space Tiger.

Talented 9 yr old band leader Aiden helped me fix my camera mike mount.

Bought a cool 10 in 1 tool at a hardware store to keep in my camera bag for the next time something needs screwing.

Interviewed the Mayor of Montpelier and Scudder Parker and some other political big wigs.

Ate FOUR cheese puffs IN A ROW without getting reprimanded.

GADZOOKS Batman what a day! Thanks for being so entertaining Montpelier!
